CINEMA MUNDI

CINEMA MUNDI is a new international film festival, which offers unique dramaturgy presenting during seven days the best feature films of the year 2009 from nearly sixty countries. Each country is represented by one film considered by national experts to have been the best of 2009. Within a few days festival visitors thus have a unique opportunity to get acquainted with global film production - to „travel around the world” in a week. Each festival day focuses on a specific geographic area (e.g. Northern Europe, South America, Australia etc.) and the daily program features films from this area. Apart from film screenings, we also organize additional cultural and social events (concerts, exhibitions, discussion with authors, meetings with representatives of individual countries, tasting the national cuisines etc.) related to the respective geographic areas.

The basic impulse and inspiration for creating this new film festival tradition came from its originally intended venue, the area of Brno Exhibition Centre and its Trade Fair Grounds. For over 80 years it has been the venue of great international trade fairs and exhibitions and it has successfully worked as the natural contact place for local and foreign businesses. Inspired by this place we came to believe we could transfer and copy the success when organizing a big international film festival, too. Due to financial reasons we had to give up the idea of organizing the festival here and we moved it (to our consequent great satisfaction) to Velky Spalicek cinema multiplex in the centre of Brno, but the idea has remained. To create a tradition of a "balance" festival which offers the opportunity to see the maximum number of the best feature films of various national cinemas of the world. To enable our audience to create their own picture about their quality and to make them acquainted with contemporary top world cinematic production. And last but not least, to create a meeting place for filmmakers and producers from all over the world and hopefully initiate their future cooperation.

Cinema Mundi presented the best Romanian and Polish film of the year

Oscar 2010: The Hurt Locker voted the best film of the year

This year’s Oscar night probably did not please any of the admirers of Avatar. Kathryn Bigelow, the director of the film, defeated James Cameron, her former husband, with her film The Hurt Locker in most categories.
